Frequently asked questions

Sizing, certification, delivery, installation and what we will not do.

How do I know what size stove I need?

Match the heating area range on the listing to your square footage, then err on the small side. An oversized stove gets damped down to stop the room cooking, and a damped-down stove smoulders — which smokes, tars the flue and wastes fuel. A stove run hot is a stove run clean.

Is it legal to sell me this stove?

Every stove on this site is EPA NSPS Step 2 certified or formally exempt, and the listing says which. We do not list anything we cannot document.

Do you deliver free?

Yes, nationwide. Stoves travel freight on a pallet. We will confirm before despatch whether it is kerbside or into the room.

Can I install it myself?

In most jurisdictions yes, with a permit and an inspection. Whether you should is a different question — the clearances and the flue specification in the manual are not suggestions, and your insurer may ask who did the work.

Do I need a permit?

Almost always, for a solid-fuel appliance. Many areas also require inspection before first use. Some air quality districts restrict installations outright. Check with your local building department before ordering.

What is the difference between catalytic and non-catalytic?

A catalytic stove passes the smoke through a coated combustor that burns it at a lower temperature, so it holds a long, low, clean burn well. The combustor is a wearing part and needs replacing every few years. A non-catalytic stove uses a baffle and secondary air instead — simpler, nothing to replace, but it prefers to be run hot.

How long will it take to arrive?

Stock units generally ship within a few days. Anything we have to order in from the manufacturer takes longer, and we will tell you the lead time before you pay.

What about the old stove?

We can usually take it away during an installation. Note that we cannot resell an uncertified appliance, and neither can you — that is the same rule that governs what we list.
